What Your Child Learns in Our English Centre for Primary 1

Primary 1 is where English stops being one subject among many and becomes the language every other subject is taught in. A child who is still decoding sentence by sentence in English will also be slower on a Math word problem, because reading speed and comprehension shape how quickly they can work through the question before they even reach the calculation. Our Primary 1 English classes are built around five skill areas, each one tied directly to what the MOE 2020 English Language Syllabus expects a Primary 1 child to master by the end of the year.

Reading Comprehension and Inference

Children read passages and books, not only comprehension worksheets. Guided reading sessions move from literal recall (what happened in the story) into inference (why it happened, what the character might do next). Most Primary 1 comprehension papers test inference rather than straightforward recall, so this is where lessons put the most weight. Teachers model how to locate the answer in the text and justify it in a full sentence, before children attempt similar questions independently. Over a term, children build the habit of reading the relevant part of a passage rather than guessing from memory.

Grammar Basics: Tenses, Subject-Verb Agreement and Word Order

Lessons cover the areas where Primary 1 writing most often breaks down: tenses, subject-verb agreement and word order. Children practise identifying and correcting errors in sentences they have written themselves, not just completing fill-in-the-blank worksheets, so the grammar rule is tied to something real they wrote. Word order gets particular attention in Primary 1, since young writers often carry spoken sentence patterns from home into written English, and this is usually the first place a marker’s pen lands on a script.

One-Picture Composition Writing

Primary 1 composition starts with a single picture prompt rather than a full written scenario. Children are given vocabulary banks for feelings, actions and descriptions, then guided to build a short, complete story around the picture: who is in it, what is happening and how the character feels. This is the same format used in the MOE syllabus for lower primary composition, and it gives children practice in the two skills that carry into every later composition level: choosing a clear main character and sustaining one idea across several sentences.

Vocabulary Building and Sentence Expansion

New words are introduced in context, through the passages and stories a child is already reading, rather than as an isolated list to memorise the night before a test. Children then practise expanding a simple sentence into a fuller one, adding detail through adjectives, time markers and connecting words such as “because”, “after” and “although”. A sentence like “The boy ran” becomes “The frightened boy ran quickly because he heard a loud noise”. This is the kind of expansion Primary 1 composition markers are looking for.

Oral Communication and Reading Aloud

Children read aloud regularly in class and take part in guided discussion, building the confidence and clear pronunciation that Primary 1 oral assessment requires. Small class sizes mean every child gets several turns to speak in a single lesson, not just one, which matters most for children who are naturally quieter or for whom English is not the only language spoken at home.

What Sets Our Primary 1 English Centre Apart

Taught by MOE-Experienced and NIE-Trained Teachers

Our Primary 1 English classes are delivered by MOE-experienced teachers, familiar with the Ministry of Education’s requirements and assessment standards, so lesson content and marking expectations stay consistent with what your child sees in school.

MOE-Aligned Curriculum Built for Lower Primary

Our Primary 1 English lessons follow the MOE 2020 English Language Syllabus, rather than a generic English curriculum retrofitted for a Singapore audience, while catering to the developmental needs of young learners. This means classroom learning transfers directly to what your child sees in school, and your child builds language skills that align with school requirements from the very beginning.

Placed by School Level, with Reading Support Where Needed

Our Primary 1 classes follow your child's level in school, so classmates share the same syllabus and pace. Most children join Primary 1 directly. If the free assessment shows that a child's reading foundation needs more support, for example a child who cannot yet read independently, we recommend starting in the Reading Programme and moving up once the basics are secure. Placement is confirmed at the free assessment and reviewed as your child progresses.

Individual Marking and Written Feedback on Early Writing

Small classes let teachers mark early writing individually and explain why answers are wrong, rather than returning a worksheet with only a tick or a cross. Each student is treated with patience, in an environment that builds confidence in English rather than anxiety about getting an answer wrong in front of the class.

Termly Review Papers and Parent Updates

We track your child’s progress through weekly homework and a termly review paper, with regular updates so you always know where your child stands against the syllabus, not only at report book time. This gives you the chance to flag any concerns to your child’s teacher early, before a small gap grows.

Benefits of English Enrichment for Primary 1 Students in Singapore

Building a Strong Language Foundation in the First Primary Year

Our Primary 1 English classes help lay a solid foundation in understanding comprehension passages, answering questions in full sentences and mastering grammar and vocabulary, supporting academic success throughout the rest of primary school. A strong foundation in the first year tends to compound rather than stay confined to the English report book alone.

Boosting Confidence in Reading

Guided practice in reading aloud and class discussion nurtures a love for the English language and encourages participation. Children who read confidently out loud in a small class of peers tend to carry that same confidence into oral assessment and class participation at school.

Keeping Pace with the MOE Primary English Syllabus

Children build the skill of reading with understanding, so that they can answer comprehension questions confidently rather than guessing from a familiar word in the passage. They also practise writing grammatically correct sentences, building compositions with a clear opening and closing, and grow familiar with exam-style question formats ahead of the transition to Primary 2, when compositions grow longer and comprehension passages more demanding.

Improving Grammar, Vocabulary and Sentence Structure

Our Primary 1 English classes are designed to expand your child’s vocabulary and help them build grammatically correct sentences. Both written and spoken English skills are strengthened side by side, since a child who can say a sentence correctly out loud is usually closer to writing it correctly too.

Primary 1 English Class Details, Class Size and Fees

Class Size and Teacher-to-Student Ratio

Our Primary 1 English classes are kept deliberately small, so teachers can give individual attention and mark each child’s writing personally rather than moving quickly through a large group.

Lesson Length, Frequency and Term Structure

Primary 1 English classes are structured around the school calendar. Consistency matters more than intensity at this stage, so a steady weekly rhythm tends to serve a Primary 1 child better than infrequent, longer sessions.

How Much Does Primary 1 English Enrichment Cost in Singapore?

Our fees are quoted per lesson, and there are no hidden charges layered on afterwards. The amount quoted at enrolment is what each lesson costs, and materials are included in that price, so there is nothing extra to prepare or purchase.

Book a Free Placement Assessment for Primary 1 English

A free placement assessment before enrolment ensures the class level fits your child. Assessments are held at any of our 15 centres and involve three steps.

What Happens at the Assessment

Placement Check: a short assessment gives our teachers a first look at your child's reading, grammar basics and oral confidence at the Primary 1 level.

Skill Gap Review: your child's teacher points out exactly where they are strong and where more practice is needed, right from this first assessment.

Class Recommendation: your child is recommended the class that fits best, whether that is Primary 1 or the Reading Programme first if reading basics need building.

Other Primary English Programmes at My English School

Primary 1 is one part of a longer pathway. Children who need more reading support before Primary 1 can start with our phonics classes, including My English Foundation Class, My Reading Readiness Class and our P1 preparatory class. As your child progresses beyond Primary 1, our Primary 2, Primary 3, Primary 4 and Primary 5 English classes build on the same MOE-aligned foundation, leading into PSLE preparation in Primary 6.

Frequently Asked Questions About Primary 1 English Enrichment in Singapore

The right Primary 1 English centre depends on whether a programme offers ability-based placement, MOE-aligned content and small classes with individual feedback. My English School places Primary 1 children by their level in school, follows the MOE 2020 English Language Syllabus, and offers a free placement assessment across 15 centres in Singapore.

At My English School, Primary 1 comprehension is built through guided reading of full passages and books, not only worksheets, moving children from literal recall into inference within small, ability-based classes.

My English School’s Primary 1 composition lessons use one-picture writing prompts with vocabulary banks for feelings, actions and descriptions. Each child’s early writing is marked and explained individually by their teacher.

Grammar basics such as tenses, subject-verb agreement and word order are covered in every Primary 1 English class at My English School, with children correcting errors in their own writing rather than only completing worksheet drills.

Look for a centre where teachers are trained against current MOE assessment criteria, not just general English proficiency, so marking and lesson content match what your child sees in school. My English School’s Primary 1 teachers are selected on this basis.

Our Primary 1 English classes cover reading comprehension, grammar, composition, vocabulary and oral communication, each building toward what the MOE 2020 English Language Syllabus expects a Primary 1 child to master by the end of the year.

Tuition typically focuses on homework help and exam drilling matched to a child’s school year. English enrichment, as we run it, places children in the class that matches their level in school, and builds foundational skills alongside the syllabus rather than only correcting mistakes after they show up on a worksheet.

Struggling or shy students learn that it is safe to take part in lessons with the help of patient teachers, small class sizes and an encouraging environment. We tailor our classes to support each child’s pace and provide extra guidance where needed.

We offer a free placement assessment for students from preschool to Primary 4 levels, rather than a trial class. The assessment lets us gauge your child’s English ability first, so the class we place them in is never a guess.

Just a pencil case with writing materials. All worksheets and lesson materials are provided by My English School during class.

Classes are typically held once a week, with each session lasting between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on the programme level.
