Benefits of Our P1 Preparation Class for Primary 1 Readiness

Our primary preparation class introduces key components of the MOE Primary 1 English curriculum, including reading, writing, listening and oracy. This ensures that children are familiar with core concepts before entering Primary 1.

By simulating the primary school setting, our primary preparation class helps children become accustomed to classroom routines, group learning, and teacher instructions, easing the transition from preschool.

MOE's own guidance on the transition to Primary 1 highlights that preparing your child and helping them understand what to expect is an important part of getting ready for primary school. Our classes provide exactly this: a safe space in which children can practise new skills and grow comfortable with primary school expectations before they begin, reducing nervousness on the first day of school.

MOE's guidance on the transition to Primary 1 advises parents to help their children familiarise themselves with new school rules and expectations before the year begins, and our structured primary preparation class is designed to do exactly that. Children practise raising their hands, taking turns, following instructions, staying focused during lessons, and engaging respectfully with both teachers and peers, all in a supportive environment where these habits can take root before Primary 1 begins.

Research from the National Institute of Education confirms that self-regulation skills are key contributors to school readiness. In Singapore's P1 environment, where children are expected to be considerably more autonomous than in preschool, this readiness can make a meaningful difference to how smoothly a child settles in.

Through small tasks and age-appropriate responsibilities, children in our primary preparation class learn to be self-reliant, helping them manage their belongings and navigate routines more independently.

What Your Child Will Learn in Our Preparatory Class for Primary 1

Comprehension and Reading Skills

Our P1 preparation class develops children's ability to read and understand age-appropriate texts with growing confidence. Lessons cover identifying key ideas, answering comprehension questions, and making simple inferences, all aligned with the MOE Primary 1 English framework. By the time your child enters Primary 1, they will be equipped to engage with classroom reading tasks with confidence and genuine understanding.

Grammar and Sentence Structure

Children are introduced to foundational grammar concepts, including sentence construction, punctuation, and basic parts of speech, in a way that feels natural and accessible. Our structured approach ensures that children understand how the English language works, rather than simply memorising rules in isolation. This gives them a strong grammatical base from which to build throughout their primary school years.

Vocabulary Building in Context

Rather than learning words in isolation, children in our preparatory class acquire vocabulary through reading, discussion, and structured activities that mirror real-world language use. This contextual approach, aligned with MOE's communicative language learning principles, helps children retain new words and use them accurately and confidently. A rich vocabulary serves as a reliable foundation for strong academic performance in Primary 1 and beyond.

Writing Skills and Creative Expression

From forming clear sentences to composing short paragraphs, our P1 preparation class introduces children to the fundamentals of written English in a supportive and encouraging setting. Lessons balance creative expression with accuracy in spelling, grammar, and structure. Children leave the programme with the ability to communicate ideas clearly on paper, a skill that will serve them across all subjects in primary school.

Oracy and Spoken English Confidence

Spoken communication is a core component of the MOE Primary 1 English curriculum, and our preparatory class dedicates focused time to building oracy skills. Children practise speaking in complete sentences, sharing ideas, and responding to questions in a structured group setting. Regular oracy activities build the confidence children need to participate actively in classroom discussions from their very first day of school.

The lessons are 1.5 hours every week. Students will work on enhancing their reading and comprehension skills so that they will be ready for Primary 1.

There are no formal prerequisites for joining the class. However, students should ideally be able to recognise common words, read and comprehend short texts, and answer basic who, what, when, where, and why questions. An assessment can be arranged to determine if your child is ready to begin our Primary 1 Preparation class.

Each lesson covers a topic or theme relevant to the students’ lives with related activities.

In each lesson, students will:

  • Practise reading
  • Learn new vocabulary words
  • Improve their understanding of grammar rules
  • Answer comprehension questions in writing
  • Write simple sentences
  • Practise weekly spelling
  • Develop a love for reading

Upon the completion of this programme, our students will be ready for primary English.

By equipping your child with the right tools and habits early on, the preparation class enhances readiness for primary school assessments and supports long-term academic confidence and success.

If your child is younger and not yet ready for a P1 preparatory class, My English School also offers a structured reading programme for preschool learners, including K1 and K2 students. This programme guides children from phonics to fluent reading with comprehension, helping them develop the literacy foundation needed before entering Primary 1.

And if your child is already in primary school, we offer tailored English enrichment classes for each level. We offer:

We recommend starting our P1 preparatory class at the beginning of Kindergarten 2, when children are aged 5 to 6. Enrolling at this stage gives your child sufficient time to build foundational English skills and develop classroom readiness before the school year begins. It also allows for gradual, ability-based progression through the curriculum, so your child enters Primary 1 feeling genuinely prepared rather than under pressure.

Kindergarten provides an important social and developmental foundation, but it does not always address the specific academic demands of Singapore's Primary 1 curriculum. Our preparatory class targets MOE-aligned English skills, structured learning habits, and classroom readiness, areas that are not always covered in depth at the preschool level. Many parents find that the two programmes complement each other well, with our class bridging the gap between kindergarten and the expectations of P1.

Our P1 preparatory class is specifically designed to bridge the transition from preschool to Primary 1, with a curriculum aligned to the MOE Primary 1 English syllabus. Unlike general English enrichment, our programme targets the precise skills children need for P1: comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing, and oracy. Placement is ability-based, class sizes are deliberately small, and lessons are structured to simulate the pace and expectations of a primary school classroom.

We maintain small class sizes across all 15 of our English enrichment centres in Singapore to ensure that every child receives personalised attention and that teachers can monitor individual progress closely. Small groups also foster a supportive learning environment in which children feel comfortable participating, asking questions, and building confidence, all of which are essential for a smooth and successful transition into Primary 1.

Signs of P1 readiness include the ability to follow simple instructions, communicate in sentences, hold a pencil correctly, and sustain focus during structured activities. If you are uncertain about your child's current level, our free placement assessment is a helpful starting point. Our teachers will advise on the most appropriate level of support for your child ahead of Primary 1, so you can make an informed decision about next steps.
