Parents often wonder when their child should begin learning English in a structured environment. Early exposure to English sounds, vocabulary, and storytelling helps children develop strong language and communication skills. This can be especially helpful in Singapore’s bilingual environment, where children may use different languages at home and in school.
Structured English classes provide opportunities for children to interact with language through guided reading, speaking, and listening activities. Early literacy development also supports smoother transitions into Primary 1, where English becomes the main language of instruction under Singapore’s MOE curriculum.
For toddlers aged three and above, English classes focus on building familiarity with sounds, words, and simple sentence structures. Lessons typically include storytelling, phonics songs, picture-based activities, and interactive play that encourage children to listen and respond in English.
These activities help children recognise letter sounds and expand their vocabulary while developing confidence speaking in simple sentences. Early exposure to English sounds also strengthens phonological awareness, which supports future reading development.
Nursery-level classes are where children begin to learn phonics in a more structured way while developing early reading skills. Students learn to recognise letters and sounds, blend phonemes together, and begin reading simple words and phrases.
Lessons also encourage children to express ideas through conversation and storytelling. These activities support cognitive development while strengthening listening and comprehension skills, helping children build confidence as emerging readers.
In K1 and K2, English lessons place greater emphasis on reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development. Children learn to read longer sentences, understand story structures, and answer simple comprehension questions.
This stage is particularly important for preparing children for Primary 1. By strengthening reading ability, vocabulary, and early writing skills, preschoolers develop the confidence needed to transition smoothly into Singapore’s formal school environment.
We also offer a specialised Primary 1 preparation course designed to help preschoolers build the language skills and confidence needed to adapt successfully to Primary 1 learning.
To ensure that your child is in good hands, teachers at My English School undergo a stringent selection process. Only teachers of the highest calibre are accepted. They utilise their experience in teaching and in-depth knowledge of our reading and primary programmes to tailor lessons to your child's needs. This not only makes English language learning effective, but also enjoyable. We conduct regular checks to ensure the delivery of our programmes reflects My English School’s high teaching standards.
A 2024 study from Guangdong University of Technology demonstrated the powerful relationship between teaching quality and student outcomes through a Structural Equation Model. The study established a significant Direct Path Coefficient (Beta) of $0.30$, proving that as teaching quality improves, academic performance follows a clear, measurable upward trajectory.
Looking for early English education for kids in Singapore? Experience our structured, research-backed curriculum and watch your child transform into a confident reader, expressive speaker, and critical thinker.
Structured learning frameworks are widely recognised as essential in early education. Singapore’s Ministry of Education also emphasises carefully designed language learning pathways through frameworks such as the Nurturing Early Learners framework, which highlights the importance of progressive and structured literacy development.
Small class sizes, engaging materials, and caring teachers create a space where children feel safe to explore, express, and excel in their language journey.
Research consistently shows that smaller classes can support stronger learning outcomes. According to research from the National Education Policy Center, students assigned to smaller classes of 13 to 17 students showed measurable achievement boost of 5 percentile rank points in reading and math compared to those in larger classes.
Our English classes for preschoolers and primary students are a hit with families and are trusted by more than 40,000 parents, thanks to a consistent track record in developing strong, independent English speakers, both in school and beyond.

Our English enrichment centres offer classes to preschoolers and primary students. Since its inception in 2012, we have continually strived to provide quality on all aspects of students’ and parents’ journey. My English School now has 15 centres across Singapore.
My English School aims to lay a strong foundation in English literacy, nurture curious and creative learners as well as critical thinkers.

The materials were developed by our capable and experienced in-house curriculum team for the exclusive use of My English School centres.
All our teachers at our English enrichment centres for kids are trained to deliver lessons in an engaging and creative manner. Our teachers instil critical thinking through open discussions in conjunction with our structured curriculum. Teachers undergo in-service teacher training quarterly for topics such as the latest MOE changes in either syllabus or exam format, changes in My English School materials, and enhancing teaching skills for specific language components and others.
Our teachers are carefully selected based on their qualifications, experience, knowledge, and their ability and willingness to work with young learners.
We understand the concerns you have about your child’s progress. Our teachers will monitor and record the learning progress of each individual student throughout the term. The findings will be shared with parents at Parent-Teacher Meetings or through an informal short discussion before or after class if time permits. In addition, at any time you may ask our education advisers to schedule an appointment for you to speak to the teacher.
A replacement session can be arranged subject to our Terms and Conditions. Arrangements have to be made through our education advisers.
Please see our Centre Locations page for our hours of operation. See our Course Calendar for dates when we are closed for course holidays and public holidays. Changes to the calendar will be posted in the Announcements section.
The My English Reading Programme has its roots in the reading programme promoted by Rudolf Flesch. The research that has been done since then in the field of linguistics culminates in the “Reading First Program”, which is widely promoted by the U.S. Department of Education. Our reading programmes consist of the same key elements as the ones that were the result of the scientific-research-based report (that reviewed more than 100,000 studies on reading):
Here's what makes our English class unique in the Singaporean context:
Our reading classes are ability-based programmes mainly catered for preschoolers. Students are placed in classes according to their ability and promoted to the next level when they meet the required learning outcomes. This approach ensures that we follow the students' speed rather than the traditional age-based approach. Our teachers monitor our student’s performance and progress closely so as to make recommendations when necessary.
Our Primary programme is a year-long programme that guides students through a meticulous process of learning in their respective levels. They will gain the skills and nuances needed and be encouraged to apply critical thinking and independent learning.
Each child is different. Two children of the same age may have different skill levels/learning needs based on the influences from family, exposure in preschool, their social environment, and more. We recognise that students of the same age may have different learning needs.
Our reading programme has four progressive courses and each course teaches different skills. The assessment ensures that a child is placed at the most appropriate course to match their current learning needs.
After the assessment, our education advisers will assist you with finding the most suitable class for your child, along with scheduling matters.
Promotion is based on your child’s own individual readiness instead of his/her age.
Every child learns at his/her own pace. Every student’s progress is tracked based on a checklist which is updated by our teachers regularly. Once a student has shown that he/she has met the goals of the course, a test will be administered to confirm the promotion to the next level. Thus, promotion to the next level can happen at any time of the year and not just at the end of the year.
The primary programme covers all the areas of the English language. Our English programmes are taught in a spiral approach by ensuring that difficulty increases as the years go by.
You can find more details about each level of our Primary Programme below:
Our My English Primary Programme abides by the strict expectations and assessment criteria of Singapore's MOE. Our English enrichment classes prepare students for various topics they will be assessed on. Our booklets may look a little different from what students see in school, but rest assured that the content taught and delivered is comparable and goes beyond what students are required to learn.
