My Primary Preparation Class workbook

My English School's P1 Preparatory Class is a Primary 1 preparation course for K2 children, built to bridge preschool phonics into the reading, writing and oracy skills Primary 1 English demands. Classes run 1.5 hours a week in groups of three to ten, small enough for every child to get real speaking and writing time with their teacher.

This P1 Preparatory Class in Singapore is ability-based, not age-based, so your child is placed at the level that actually matches where they are. Most parents begin around six to nine months before the P1 registration phases open, giving a full K2 year to build skills gradually rather than in a last-minute rush.

We run this preparatory class for Primary 1 across 15 centres islandwide, with a free placement assessment at every one of them.

When to Start P1 Preparation Before the Primary 1 Registration Exercise

The P1 Registration Phases and Key Dates

Primary 1 registration runs online through MOE's P1 Registration Portal, in five phases for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents: Phase 1, Phase 2A, Phase 2B, Phase 2C and Phase 2C Supplementary. Each phase serves a different priority group, for example children with a sibling already at the school, or those living within a set distance of it, and a child only needs to register in the first phase they qualify for.

View registration phase details

The exercise typically opens in late June and runs through to around October. Phase 1 and Phase 2A are usually held across the first two weeks of July, Phase 2B in the third week of July, Phase 2C in the last week of July or first week of August, and Phase 2C Supplementary roughly two weeks after that. MOE publishes the confirmed dates for the current year on the P1 Registration Portal, so it is worth checking there directly once the exercise opens.

Why Most Parents Begin Six to Nine Months Ahead

Most parents begin P1 preparation six to nine months before registration phases open. In practice, that means starting a P1 preparatory class near the start of your child's K2 year, well before the July phases begin. Ability-based placement means your child begins wherever they currently are and progresses at a pace that suits them, so an early start builds skills gradually rather than compressing them into a rush before Primary 1.

A Term-by-Term P1 Preparation Timeline for K2

Term 1 (January to March):

writing and oracy practice deepens, running alongside the Phase 2B, 2C and 2C Supplementary windows

Term 4 (October to December):

consolidation and a final readiness check, so your child enters Primary 1 already familiar with a classroom's pace

What Your Child Will Learn in Our Preparatory Class for Primary 1

Our P1 Preparatory Class covers five areas: reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing and oracy, all aligned with the MOE 2020 English Language Syllabus. Lessons cover blending, sight words, sentence construction and oral communication, building on the phonics your child has already picked up at preschool.

Comprehension and Reading Skills

Your child learns to read and understand age-appropriate texts with growing confidence. Lessons cover identifying key ideas, answering comprehension questions and making simple inferences. By the time your child enters Primary 1, they can engage with classroom reading tasks with real understanding, not just recognition.

Grammar and Sentence Structure

Children are introduced to sentence construction, punctuation and basic parts of speech in a way that feels natural rather than memorised. Understanding how English works, rather than just following rules by rote, gives your child a grammatical base to build on throughout primary school.

Vocabulary Building in Context

Rather than learning word lists, children acquire vocabulary through reading, discussion and structured activities that mirror how language is actually used. This contextual approach helps children retain new words and use them accurately, which matters more for Primary 1 readiness than a long list of words memorised in isolation.

Writing Skills and Creative Expression

From forming clear sentences to composing short paragraphs, your child is introduced to written English in a supportive setting that balances creative expression with accuracy in spelling and structure. They leave the programme able to put ideas on paper clearly, a skill that carries across every primary school subject.

Oracy and Spoken English Confidence

Spoken communication is a core part of the MOE Primary 1 English curriculum, so we dedicate focused time to it. Children practise speaking in complete sentences, sharing ideas and responding to questions in a group setting, building the confidence to participate from their first day of school.

What This Course Does Not Cover

This is an English-only Primary 1 preparation course. If your child also needs numeracy or Hanyu Pinyin preparation, you will want to cover that separately. Our focus is getting P1 English right.

If your child has not yet built basic phonics or reading confidence, our English Foundation Class and Reading Readiness Class cover those earlier stages, both part of our wider Reading Programme.

Benefits of Our P1 Preparation Class for Primary 1 Readiness

What sets our P1 Preparatory Class apart is how closely it simulates an actual primary school classroom, not just the English syllabus inside it.

Builds a Strong Foundation for Primary 1 English

Our primary preparation class introduces the core components of the MOE Primary 1 English curriculum, covering reading, writing, listening and oracy. This ensures children are already familiar with core concepts before entering Primary 1, rather than meeting them for the first time in class.

Practising School Routines: Timetables, Bags and Mock Recess

Our lessons simulate a primary classroom directly. Children practise following a lesson timetable, packing and unpacking their own bag, taking a structured recess break, raising their hand before speaking and taking turns during group activities. These are small routines, but they are the ones that catch new P1 students off guard in the first weeks of school.

Boosts Confidence and Reduces First-Day Anxiety

MOE's own guidance on the transition to Primary 1 highlights that preparing your child and helping them understand what to expect is an important part of getting ready for primary school. Our classes give children a safe space to practise these new skills and grow comfortable with primary school expectations before they begin, reducing nervousness on the first day.

Following Multi-Step Instructions Independently

MOE's guidance on the transition to Primary 1 also advises parents to help their children get familiar with new rules and expectations before the school year begins. Our lessons are structured to do exactly that. Children practise following two and three-step instructions without prompting, staying focused during a full lesson and engaging respectfully with both teachers and classmates.

Sitting Through Longer Lessons and Managing Belongings

Research from the National Institute of Education confirms that self-regulation skills are key contributors to school readiness. Singapore's P1 classroom expects considerably more autonomy than preschool, and this readiness can make a real difference to how smoothly a child settles in. Through small tasks and age-appropriate responsibilities, children in our class learn to manage their own belongings, sit through a longer lesson block and navigate routines independently.

How to Choose a P1 Preparatory Class in Singapore

The best P1 preparatory classes in Singapore share a few traits: ability-based placement, small class sizes, a curriculum mapped to the MOE syllabus and teachers with real primary classroom experience. Here is what to check before enrolling.

A K2 Primary 1 Readiness Checklist for Parents

Before comparing centres, it helps to know where your child currently stands. Signs your child may be ready to start a P1 preparatory class include:

  • Follows instructions: understands and acts on two-step spoken instructions without repeated prompting
  • Speaks in full sentences: can describe an event or idea in more than one sentence
  • Holds a pencil correctly: has the fine motor control to write with reasonable control
  • Sustains focus: can stay engaged with one activity for 15 to 20 minutes
  • Recognises common words: identifies a growing bank of everyday words on sight

If most of these are already showing up, your child is likely ready to start. If only one or two are, that is also completely normal. Ability-based placement means a good class meets your child where they are.

Six Questions to Ask Before Enrolling

  • Is placement based on ability, or simply on age?
  • What is the actual class size, not just "small groups"?
  • Is the curriculum mapped explicitly to the MOE English Language Syllabus?
  • How is progress tracked and shared with parents?
  • What happens if my child misses a lesson?
  • Are teachers trained specifically for this age group, or shared across all levels?

P1 Preparation vs General English Enrichment

A P1 preparatory class is purpose-built to bridge one specific transition, from preschool phonics to the comprehension, grammar, writing and oracy skills Primary 1 expects, on a timeline built around your child's K2 year. General English enrichment serves a broader, ongoing goal, building skills over time without that fixed endpoint.

After P1 Preparation: Primary 1 English and Beyond

Once your child moves into primary school, we offer English classes for every level: English enrichment for Primary 1, Primary 2 English classes, English enrichment for Primary 3, Primary 4 English classes and Primary 5 English classes, through to focused PSLE English preparation in Primary 6. Each one carries the same ability-based placement and small class sizes as this course, adjusted for what that year of the MOE syllabus demands.

Frequently Asked Questions About P1 Preparatory Classes and Primary 1 Readiness in Singapore

When should my child start P1 preparation before P1 registration?

Most parents start six to nine months before the P1 registration phases open, which usually means beginning at the start of your child's K2 year. This gives a full year for ability-based progression before Primary 1 begins, rather than a last-minute rush ahead of registration.

How much does a P1 preparatory class cost in Singapore?

My English School prices this preparatory class on a termly basis. As a general guide, short P1 preparation modules in Singapore typically range from S$200 to S$800 a term, depending on module length and centre. Contact your nearest My English School centre for the current term fee.

Does a P1 preparation course cover Maths as well as English?

No. This is an English-only Primary 1 preparation course, covering reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing and oracy. If your child also needs numeracy preparation, you will want to arrange that separately.

Do children need Hanyu Pinyin preparation before Primary 1?

Hanyu Pinyin is taught as part of the Mother Tongue curriculum, not English, so it sits outside this course. Parents who want Mother Tongue preparation alongside P1 English readiness will need a separate programme for that subject.

How many lessons are in a P1 preparation module?

Contact your nearest My English School centre to confirm the number of lessons in the current P1 preparation module.

How long is the P1 preparation class at My English School?

Lessons run 1.5 hours a week, working on the reading, comprehension, grammar, writing and oracy skills your child needs for Primary 1.

Are there prerequisites for enrolling in a P1 preparatory class?

There are no formal prerequisites. Ideally, your child can already recognise common words, read and understand short texts, and answer basic who, what, when, where and why questions. A free assessment can confirm whether your child is ready to begin.

How does a P1 preparation class improve my child's academic performance?

By building the right tools and habits early, the class supports readiness for primary school assessments and long-term academic confidence, rather than a single test score.

What age should my child start a preparatory class for Primary 1?

We recommend starting at the beginning of Kindergarten 2, around ages five to six. This gives your child enough time to build foundational English skills and classroom readiness gradually, through ability-based progression, rather than under pressure close to Primary 1.

Is a P1 preparatory class necessary if my child attends kindergarten?

Kindergarten builds an important social and developmental foundation, but it does not always address the specific academic demands of Singapore's Primary 1 curriculum. Our class targets MOE-aligned English skills and classroom readiness that many preschools do not cover in depth, and the two tend to complement each other well.

How is your P1 preparation class different from regular English enrichment?

This class is purpose-built to bridge the transition from preschool to Primary 1, with a curriculum mapped to the MOE Primary 1 English syllabus. General English enrichment builds skills at a broader, ongoing pace. Placement here is ability-based, class sizes stay small, and lessons are structured to match the pace of an actual primary classroom.

What is the class size for your P1 preparatory class in Singapore?

Classes are kept small so every child gets real speaking and writing time with their teacher, and progress can be tracked individually. Contact your nearest centre to confirm the current class size.

How do I know if my child is ready for Primary 1?

Signs of readiness include following simple instructions, communicating in full sentences, holding a pencil correctly and sustaining focus during structured activities. If you are unsure, a free placement assessment is a good starting point. Our teachers will advise on the right level of support ahead of Primary 1.
