Why Is Reading Important for Preschoolers?

What are early reading skills? More than just a lovely bonding activity, reading to preschoolers unlocks a world of profound benefits for their development. Instilling a love for reading early on sets the stage for a lifetime of learning and growth. For preschoolers, true comprehension often begins from the moment they make the connection between the sounds they hear you read, and the symbols they see on the printed page.

Parents and educators who nurture early reading skills can help children to spark cognitive growth, foster emotional intelligence, accelerate language acquisition, and pave the way for future academic success. By making reading a consistent and enjoyable part of a child's routine, we unlock a world of possibilities and equip them with essential skills for navigating their future.

Reading Is Good for Cognitive Development

Reading is a powerful catalyst for cognitive development in preschoolers. When children engage with stories, they're not just passive absorbers of invention; they're actively building the connection between narratives and ideas. According to a 2023 study carried out in the United Kingdom and China, children who routinely read for pleasure performed better in cognitive tests as adolescents. Their love of reading gave them an advantage over their peers on verbal learning, memory, speech development and academic achievements.

How to help preschoolers learn to read? Why not begin with simple picture books, which excel in introducing complex concepts in age-appropriate ways? Through picture books, children are able to grasp ideas like cause and effect (What happens when the bear eats too much honey?), sequencing (What happened first, next, and last in the story?), and logic (Can a big bad wolf really "blow" my house away with a huff and a puff?). These early encounters with narrative structure and conceptual understanding lay a strong groundwork for critical thinking as they grow.

Reading Feeds the Imagination and Builds Empathy

Stories are gateways to limitless imagination. Through reading, preschoolers are encouraged to think creatively and envision new possibilities. They can imagine themselves flying with a dragon, exploring a magical forest, or befriending a talking animal. This imaginative play fostered by reading is crucial for developing innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.

The relationship between reading and empathy is well-understood. As children immerse themselves in diverse characters and their experiences, they begin to understand different emotions, perspectives, and lifestyles. This exposure helps them develop emotional awareness, which in turn supports better social interactions and emotional regulation. Research in the United Kingdom has also shown that children with higher emotional and social competencies tend to do better academically.

Reading Accelerates Early Language & Literacy Skills

One of the most immediate benefits of early reading is the significant expansion of a preschooler's vocabulary. They encounter new words in context, making it easier for them to understand and eventually use these words themselves. Reading also greatly improves phonological awareness – the ability to recognise and manipulate the sounds in spoken language, which is a critical precursor to decoding and spelling.

Exposure to different sentence structures, rhythm, and storytelling patterns through books naturally enhances a child's linguistic abilities. They learn how language is organised and used effectively. This strong foundation in early literacy is paramount for preparing children for future school success in both reading and writing, giving them a distinct advantage as they progress through their academic journey.

Reading Creates a Foundation for Lifelong Learning

Reading is more than just a skill; it's a doorway to a lifelong love for learning. It cultivates a natural curiosity about the world and builds self-confidence in a child's ability to learn and discover. When children enjoy reading, they are more likely to seek out knowledge independently.

This early engagement with books becomes a strong foundation for lifelong academic and personal growth. The long-term benefits are substantial: improved school readiness, enhanced focus and concentration, and, most importantly, the development of a genuine love for independent discovery. A child who loves to read will always have a powerful tool for self-education and enrichment at their fingertips.

My English School’s Preschool Programme

Here at My English School, we understand the profound impact of early reading on a child's development. We are deeply committed to fostering preschool reading skills through our structured, ability-based reading programmes.

How Our Preschool Programme Works

  • My English Foundation Class: The key focus of this class is phonemic awareness. Kids learn to use basic vocabulary in engaging ways through songs, sounds and rhymes. Here, they learn how to hear and reproduce the sounds of English accurately by isolating the individual sounds of words.
  • My Reading Readiness Class: Now that kids have mastered phonemic awareness, the next step is decoding through phonics. Students here are now able to identify and sound out all the letters of the alphabet accurately. Through practice, they gain the ability to sound out common letter combinations, as well as recognise and apply common spelling patterns.
  • My Reading Class: Students progress steadily through a series of lessons aimed at polishing their early reading skills. Here, they hone their ability to decode the printed letters that make up any written word in English, whether or not they have ever seen the word before, independent of meaning or context.
  • My Primary Preparation Class: Aimed at students who have acquired basic reading skills, each lesson covers a topic or theme relevant to students' lives and engages them with interactive activities. In each lesson, students will:
  • Practise reading
  • Learn new words to build their vocabulary
  • Improve their understanding of grammatical rules
  • Answer comprehension questions in writing
  • Write simple sentences
  • Practise spelling
  • Develop a love for reading

Upon completion of our programme, students will be ready to transition from the preschool English to the primary school English curriculum.
